Degree of call synchrony during interactions between male snowy tree crickets
نویسنده
چکیده
Call synchrony has been reported for the snowy tree cricket (Oecanthusfultow), but the degree to which it occurs in natural interactions has not been previously investigated. I recorded acoustic interactions among ten pairs of male snowy tree crickets to determine the degree to which call synchrony occurs. High levels of call synchrony (percent of calls that temporally overlapped another call) were found in all pairs, but in only half of the pairs was synchrony greater than expected by chance. Males differed considerably in their tendency to temporally overlap the calls of their neighbors. There was minimal frequency overlap of calls in all pairs. Avoidance of frequency overlap may have allowed calls of individual males to be distinguished when there was temporal overlap.

Heterospecific Acoustic Interference: Effects on Calling in the Frog Oophaga pumilio in Nicaragua
Call rate suppression is a common short-term solution for avoiding acoustic interference in animals. It has been widely documented between and within frog species, but the effects of non-anuran calling on frog vocalizations are less well known. Heterospecific acoustic interference on the calling of male Oophaga pumilio (formerly Dendrobates pumilio) was studied in a lowland, wet tropical forest...
متن کاملStay tuned: active amplification tunes tree cricket ears to track temperature-dependent song frequency.
Tree cricket males produce tonal songs, used for mate attraction and male-male interactions. Active mechanics tunes hearing to conspecific song frequency. However, tree cricket song frequency increases with temperature, presenting a problem for tuned listeners. We show that the actively amplified frequency increases with temperature, thus shifting mechanical and neuronal auditory tuning to main...
متن کاملMechanical phase shifters for coherent acoustic radiation in the stridulating wings of crickets: the plectrum mechanism.
Male crickets produce stridulatory songs using engaged tegmina (forewings): a plectrum on the left sweeps along a tooth row on the right. During stridulation, the plectrum moves across the teeth and vibrations are amplified by the surrounding cells and veins, resonating at the frequency of tooth impacts. The advance of the plectrum on the file is controlled by an escapement mechanism so that pa...
متن کاملAcoustic Synchrony
Many different biological systems experience mutual synchrony [2]. We have studied the particular case of synchrony amongst two crickets using an adapted integrate and fire model studied by Mirollo and Strogatz. By using a microphone and speaker coupling to model a cricket, we tested to see if the crickets would synchronize. I found conclusive data for mutual synchrony when running numerical si...
متن کاملPerception of social synchrony induces mother–child gamma coupling in the social brain
The recent call to move from focus on one brain's functioning to two-brain communication initiated a search for mechanisms that enable two humans to coordinate brain response during social interactions. Here, we utilized the mother-child context as a developmentally salient setting to study two-brain coupling. Mothers and their 9-year-old children were videotaped at home in positive and conflic...
